[Exclusive Alumni Interview] Building a Green and Environmentally Friendly Kingdom Yang Lianzhi
Yang Lianzhi, a 27th class alumnus of the Department of Chemical Engineering of Tunghai University, is the chairman and general manager of Nova Materials Technology Co., Ltd. He was awarded the 4th (2013) Alumni Model of the Tunghai University Alumni Association, elected as the chairman of the Business Leaders Association of the Republic of China, the founding president of the Beichen Rotary Club, the vice president of the Cross-Strait Cultural and Economic Exchange Association, and the first Business Leader Award of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Nova Materials Technology Environmental Protection Enterprise mainly uses AdBlue catalyst reductant to effectively reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel vehicles. It is currently stationed at 170 gas stations across Taiwan and has been authorized to produce in China, Singapore, India, Southeast Asia, Europe, etc., making it the largest automotive urea supplier in Taiwan.
Respect God, love people, be filial to relatives and filial piety
Chairman Yang said that he comes from an ordinary family. His father has been bedridden for 23 years. The family's financial situation is difficult, and his mother has worked hard to help the children grow up. He has seen every detail of this. The difficult real life has prompted him to make a wish to redouble his efforts to become a capable person to repay his parents and society. The chairman said that although he was admitted to the Department of Medicine of the National Defense Medical College and the Department of Chemical Engineering of Tunghai University at the same time, he chose to study at Tunghai University. At that time, he also actively studied and obtained a graduation degree from Tunghai University, which became the pride of his parents. Although he took a photo with his parents after graduation on the Tunghai campus Not long after that, just when he was about to repay his father, God took his father away, which became a regret in his heart, but it also made him cherish his filial piety to his mother even more. Even if he encountered the ups and downs of life, he would strengthen himself and move forward with the expectations of his parents.
Decide your own life
After graduating from college, his first job was as an engineer at Formosa Plastics, and then he switched to the truck business. He began to explore various raw materials for automobile coatings and baking varnishes, and his inseparable bond with automobiles was planted. Later, he worked as a salesman in DuPont, a foreign-owned company that everyone envied, and his performance during this period was at the top of DuPont. At the age of 39, the senior left the foreign company, gave up his million-dollar annual salary, and started his own business outside, starting from scratch. He believes that "you can decide your own life." Although there are constant challenges on the entrepreneurial road, the arduous growth has created extraordinary perseverance. There were also noble people who helped him on his entrepreneurial journey. Whether he was promoted by his senior from the Department of Chemical Engineering to work at Formosa Plastics after graduation, or later when his seniors supported and invested in starting a business, they all led him on the road to the kingdom of environmental protection. When the company was first started, the company's shareholders suggested Australia's environmental protection experience. The Taiwanese government was about to implement environmental protection regulations. He sensed potential business opportunities and began to conduct field research and study the environmental protection regulations in the law. With the professionalism and experience accumulated through many years of work, and the help of noble people and seniors, environmental protection and trucks seemed to be parallel lines. Opportunities such as this would eventually intersect in career success.
Chairman Yang said that in the first year of starting a business, and even in the third to fifth years, the company can be said to be constantly consuming capital, so hard that it even begins to doubt life; five to eight years is a critical period for the company. At this stage, shareholders' willingness to increase capital will drop significantly. The company needs to achieve results before it can obtain a loan from the bank. After the eighth year of growth, the company's finances and revenue gradually stabilized. In 2008, the government implemented environmental standards. He confidently said that all diesel vehicles in the future would need to add automotive urea to reduce carbon emissions, so he began to invest in product research and development. In 2017, taking advantage of the combination of the Internet of Things and big data, Nova launched Taiwan's first "i-Depot smart storage tank refilling system" to meet customer needs such as instant returns, checkout systems, and zero inventory, turning passiveness into an ecosystem that actively replenishes supply. It not only strengthens the viscosity of the interactive relationship with customers, but also builds a highly stable, efficient, safe and easy-to-manage networking system for users, which is beneficial to passenger transport operators, transportation fleets, vehicle maintenance and inspection plants, and cloud applications and data analysis to save costs and gain leading competitive advantages.
Looking back on the entrepreneurial process, he said, "Success cannot be too fast, nor can success be too slow." If it is too early, you will not have enough experience and you are not ready; if it is too late, it will be too late when the market matures or your personal physical strength or other conditions decline. Cultivated through time, it is an important key to the success of a business. In addition, in order to thank his alma mater for his cultivation, the chairman often took the lead in making donations and even gave speeches to his alma mater to pass on his career experience. He even donated more than 40,000 masks from all walks of life during this epidemic. Most of the anti-epidemic care packages that alumni received were donations from the chairman. Because Chairman Yang believes that the secret of success comes from "maintaining a positive mood at all times and the principle of respecting God and loving people." With concentration and hard work, he accomplishes simple tasks to the extreme, constantly strives to learn the essence of business management, and fully practices Donghai's sincere spirit, hoping to become an industrialist entering the global market.
Donghai Education looks internationally
Donghai Education attaches great importance to students' foreign language skills. He continued to improve his foreign language skills in college so that he can communicate fluently and smoothly with customers while working in foreign companies. This will also become the company's ability to enter the international market in the future. Labor education is also another important indicator. Recalling Donghai’s past, although it was very hard to get up early and clean every day, he developed the discipline to wake up early and meet his own requirements in the future. He was able to maintain creativity and execute tasks at the best time of the day, and naturally had more time than others. He believes that this is also the attitude towards life that modern young people lack most when they go to bed late and are addicted to the Internet.
Chairman Yang, as someone who has experienced this, advised the students that success is not accidental and they should seize every opportunity. After graduation, junior students should participate more in the activities of the school's alumni association. Firstly, they can have more connections with their alma mater.
